NIGERIANS DEMAND FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

7,500+ signatures in under three days as petition calls for a verifiable election, a people-written constitution and a peaceful referendum — without a single paid advertisement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABUJA / WASHINGTON — September 28, 2026 — More than 7,500 people have signed a fast-growing petition in less than three days, calling for a verifiable 2027 election, a constitution written through a popular process, and a peaceful referendum allowing the nations of Nigeria to decide their own political future.

The petition has crossed that mark without paid advertising or paid promotion.

The overwhelming majority of signatures have come from inside Nigeria.

“This is not a social-media poll. It is not a pile of likes. It is not somebody clicking an emoji and moving on,” said organizer Mike Arnold, known widely in Nigeria as #EarthShaker.

“More than 7,500 people stopped what they were doing, opened the petition, entered their information and put their names behind it — in less than three days. Nobody paid them. Nobody bought an ad to reach them. They found it, they signed it, and they are passing it from person to person. Something is moving.”

The petition is addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump and centers on three demands:

A verifiable 2027 election. The petition calls for independent verification of polling-unit results so official totals can be checked against results recorded and posted at the polling-unit level.

A constitution written through a popular process. The petition argues that Nigerians should have the opportunity to determine the constitutional framework under which they are governed.

A peaceful referendum on Nigeria’s political future. The petition calls for a supervised vote allowing Nigeria’s constituent nations and regions to determine how they wish to live together — including the possibility of political restructuring or separation.

The petition states that it is not asking the United States to choose Nigeria’s leader. Its stated demand is that Nigerians be able to make political choices through processes whose results can be independently verified.

Nigeria’s presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027.

“THE NUMBER HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING”

Arnold said the petition was deliberately built with safeguards intended to prevent the headline number from becoming a meaningless internet metric.

“If I am going to put a number in front of the White House, that number has to mean something. One email address gets one signature. Automated submissions are screened through Cloudflare Turnstile. There is a honeypot bot trap. Duplicate-email protection is enforced on the server. Likes do not count. Comments do not count. Shares do not count. Only an actual submitted petition counts.”

The campaign’s live counter reads directly from its petition database.

Publicly displayed recent signers are limited to first name, last initial, and state or country for those who permit their names to appear. Email addresses are not displayed publicly.

The campaign also tracks signatures by country and by Nigerian state, creating a geographic record of where support is originating.

GRASSROOTS RESPONSE, NO PAID MACHINE

Arnold said the absence of paid promotion makes the first three days particularly noteworthy.

“There is no advertising machine behind this. No paid social campaign. No consultants buying traffic. This started with a link and people deciding for themselves that their names belonged on it.”

He added:

“Nigeria has no shortage of people speaking for Nigerians. What interested me was giving Nigerians somewhere to speak for themselves — and then counting the people who actually did it.”

The early response has been strongest in several southeastern states, while signatures have also come from other parts of Nigeria and from Nigerians and supporters abroad.

The petition’s organizers intend to deliver the final signature count, geographic breakdown and selected signer comments to the White House.

A LIVE COUNT, NOT A STATIC CLAIM

Unlike a conventional petition announcement built around a fixed number, the campaign publishes its signature count live.

That means the figure reported in this release will likely already be outdated by the time many readers see it.

Arnold said that is precisely the point.

“Do not take my word for the number. Go look at it. The counter is live. If it says 7,500 today and 8,000 tomorrow, that is because more people signed. The database keeps the score.”
