The Oldest Playbook in the World
Muhammad was not just a “prophet.” He was a conqueror. And the tactics he used to build an empire are being used today — in Nigeria, in Britain, in France, in Minnesota. Here is the playbook.
BY MIKE ARNOLD | mikea230.sg-host.com/
In 1899, Winston Churchill wrote words that have proven more prophetic with every passing decade:
“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy… The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property — either as a child, a wife, or a concubine — must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities… but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.” – Sir. Winston Churchill
Hydrophobia is rabies. Churchill saw the infection clearly 127 years ago. What he described — the frenzy, the fatalism, the enslavement of women, the paralysis of civilization — is not ancient history. It is the operating logic of an ideology that has been expanding, contracting, and expanding again for fourteen centuries.
Muhammad was not just a prophet. He was a conqueror. He didn’t just preach a religion. He built an army, conquered territory, ordered assassinations, and personally approved the killing of people who criticized him. Within twenty years of his first revelation, he had unified the Arabian Peninsula by force. Within a century of his death, his followers had carved an empire from Spain to Persia.
This is not anti-Islamic propaganda. It is Islamic history — recorded by Muslim scholars, celebrated in Muslim tradition, and considered the perfect model for human behavior by more than a billion people today.
That last part is what makes this different from every other religion on earth. In Christianity, we revere Jesus but we don’t replicate his governance — because he didn’t govern. In Islam, Muhammad governed. He made war. He made peace. He made law. And every move he made is considered divinely guided, eternally valid, and worthy of imitation.
So when you see a mob burn a girl alive for a WhatsApp message, they are not going rogue. They are following the template. Muhammad had critics killed for their words. He praised the killers. The template is 1,400 years old. It has never been revised. It has never been repudiated by any Islamic authority with the standing to make it stick.
Here is what that template has produced, everywhere it has been fully applied.
Communities destroyed. Populations converted at gunpoint. Churches burned. Libraries torched. Ancient civilizations erased and replaced. The Christians of Mosul — gone in a weekend, after 1,600 years. The Middle East was majority Christian before Islamic conquest. It is less than four percent Christian today. Nigeria’s Middle Belt — farming communities that had existed for centuries — burned to the ground in coordinated midnight raids, more than 125,000 dead since 2009, millions driven from their land.
Every one of those transformations followed the same progression. The same arguments. The same tactics. The same phases. As predictable as a playbook — because it is a playbook. Codified by Muhammad himself. Refined over fourteen centuries. Deployed today in Nigeria, in Britain, in France, in Minnesota, in Michigan.
And in every case where it has been stopped — every single case in 1,400 years — it was stopped by force. Charles Martel at Tours, 732 AD. The gates of Vienna, 1683. The Israeli Defense Forces, every decade since 1948. The French military in Mali, 2013. The Philippine army retaking Marawi, 2017. Christmas Day 2025, U.S. forces striking jihadist camps in Sokoto, Nigeria — and the situation has gotten worse since.
Every halt of this ideology in history came through direct military force.
Which means we face a hard choice. Learn the playbook now — recognize it, name it, counter it, build the cultural immune system before the disease takes hold — or wait. And discover what every civilization that waited discovered.
I’ve spent fifteen years working in Nigeria, including traveling to Bokkos Local Government Area in the months after jihadists massacred Christians on Christmas Day 2023. What I saw was not just the silence of a cleared village — it was mountains of fresh dirt where Chinese strip-mining operations had already moved in behind the killing. The people gone. The machinery arrived. I have sat with orphans who watched their parents hacked to death and survived to tell it.
I want us to be the first civilization in history to stop this without a war in our own backyard. That means understanding exactly what we’re dealing with.
Here is the playbook.
A NOTE ON THE MOSQUE
Before we get into the tactics, we need to clear up a misconception that gets people killed.
People in the West think of a mosque the way they think of a church — a place of worship, a community gathering space, a sanctuary. Spiritually significant. Politically neutral.
That is not what Muhammad established.
The mosque in Medina was Muhammad’s command center. It was where he received intelligence, planned military campaigns, issued rulings, organized finances, coordinated his political alliances, and dispatched fighters. Worship happened there. So did everything else. The mosque was the nerve center of an expanding political and military operation, and the two functions — spiritual and strategic — were never separate. They were the same thing.
That model has never changed. In Nigeria, mosques have been documented as weapons storage sites, coordination hubs for Boko Haram and ISWAP operations, and radicalization centers where fighters are recruited and dispatched. In Britain, several mosques have been prosecuted for financing terrorism and producing recruits for ISIS. In the United States, federal prosecutions have documented mosques used for material support of terrorism, fundraising for jihadist networks, and the dissemination of literature calling for the violent overthrow of the U.S. government.
None of this means every person who walks into a mosque is a terrorist. Most are not. Most are ordinary people seeking God.
But the institution — as Muhammad designed it — is not a church. It is a base of operations that also functions as a place of worship. Treating it as only the latter is a category error that has cost lives.
Now. The playbook.
PHASE 1: THE WEAK HAND
Every Islamic expansion in history starts the same way — from a position of weakness.
This is not an accident. It is doctrine. Muhammad established it in Mecca, where he preached for twelve years as a minority. Outnumbered, he did not fight. He used every other tool available.
Study this phase carefully. This is where the West always gets fooled.
Victimhood First.
The first move is always victimhood. The community is persecuted. Misunderstood. Targeted. Any resistance to Islamic expansion — any question, any criticism, any pushback — is immediately reframed as oppression. The host culture’s normal immune response is labeled hatred.
In Muhammad’s Mecca, the Quraysh tribe’s resistance to his preaching became ‘persecution of Muslims.’ Today, any examination of Islamic ideology becomes ‘Islamophobia.’ The word was coined for this purpose — to place Islamic doctrine beyond the reach of the critical inquiry that every other belief system in a free society is subject to.
The genius of it is that it turns the host culture’s own values against it. Western civilization is built on protecting minorities. The moment you frame yourself as a persecuted minority, you recruit the host culture’s deepest instincts to shield you — from itself.
Interfaith Flattery.
Muhammad told the Jews and Christians of Medina that he respected them. That they were People of the Book. That Islam honored their prophets. Jesus is revered in Islam. Moses too. We share the same God.
It worked. The tribes of Medina welcomed him.
Within a few years, two Jewish tribes were expelled. The third — the Banu Qurayza — between 600 and 900 men were beheaded in a single day. Their women and children were enslaved.
Today the interfaith flattery sounds like: ‘We love Jesus too.’ ‘Islam means peace.’ ‘We just want to worship alongside you.’ And Western Christians, who are genuinely taught to love their neighbors, open the door.
The flattery is not a lie exactly. It is a phase. It lasts precisely as long as it is useful.
Grievance Banking.
Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is forgiven. Every cartoon. Every critical article. Every honest historical observation. Every comedian’s joke. All of it is catalogued, magnified, and stored — not necessarily for immediate use, but for eventual use.
Muhammad kept meticulous score. When he was strong enough to act, the grievances provided the justification. The offense might be years old. It didn’t matter.
This is why you cannot appease this system. Every accommodation generates a new demand. Every apology is banked as an admission of guilt. The account is never meant to be closed.
Migration as Strategy.
When Muhammad could no longer operate effectively in Mecca, he didn’t surrender. He migrated to Medina. The Hijra — the migration — is so foundational that the Islamic calendar begins with it. It was not retreat. It was repositioning. He went where he could build a base, consolidate strength, and return from a position of power.
He returned and took Mecca eight years later.
Migration in Islamic doctrine is not simply moving. It carries theological weight. The early Islamic jurists divided the world into two spheres — Dar al-Islam, the house of submission, and Dar al-Harb, the house of war. Territory not yet under Islamic governance is, by definition, a theater of eventual expansion.
Most Muslim immigrants to the West are simply people looking for a better life. That is true and important to say. But the ideology that travels with the expansion — and the institutions that organize and direct it — operate from this framework. The destination is not just a new home. It is new territory.
PHASE 2: BUILDING THE BASE
Once a foothold exists, the tools change. Quietly. Gradually. In ways the host culture interprets as normal community development.
Parallel Institutions.
Sharia courts. Islamic arbitration panels. Community dispute resolution outside the host legal system. Schools with a parallel curriculum. Mosques functioning as community governments.
None of it is hidden. All of it is framed as religious freedom — values the host culture holds dear. In isolation, each piece looks reasonable. The cumulative effect is a community that increasingly answers to a different authority. A state within a state. Loyal to a different law.
Muhammad built exactly this in Medina — a community operating by Islamic rules within a larger society. Then the larger society was absorbed.
In Britain today there are more than 85 registered Sharia courts operating alongside the civil legal system. In Nigeria, twelve northern states operate full criminal Sharia — including the death penalty for blasphemy — within a constitutional democracy that explicitly prohibits state religion. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened in phases, each one normalized before the next was introduced.
Lawfare.
The host culture’s own legal system becomes a weapon. Anti-discrimination law. Hate speech statutes. Human rights frameworks — built to protect individuals from state power — are deployed to shield an ideology from examination.
Criticize Islamic doctrine and face a lawsuit. Draw a cartoon and face prosecution. Teach accurate Islamic history in a university and face a federal complaint. Write a book and spend a decade in hiding — as Salman Rushdie did. As Ayaan Hirsi Ali still does.
Muhammad used treaties the same way — not as binding commitments but as tactical instruments, honored when useful and discarded when not. The goal was never legal compliance. The goal was advantage.
Silencing Critics.
This is where the soft phase ends and the hard phase begins — and the line is deliberately blurred.
Muhammad had his critics killed. Not for violence. For words. Asma bint Marwan wrote poetry mocking him. Dead — killed in her home while her children slept around her. Muhammad praised the killer in the morning. Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf wrote satirical verses. Dead. Abu Afak, reportedly more than 100 years old, wrote critical poems. Dead.
The lesson spread instantly. You didn’t need to kill everyone. You killed enough that everyone else went quiet.
Today the silencing operates on a spectrum. At the soft end — social media mobs, career destruction, publishers dropping books. In the middle — credible death threats that force authors and cartoonists to live under police protection. At the hard end — Theo van Gogh shot and stabbed in Amsterdam. The Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris. Salman Rushdie stabbed on a stage in New York.
Most people never reach the hard end. They don’t need to. The soft end is enough to produce self-censorship across an entire culture. Editors don’t publish. Comedians don’t joke. Politicians don’t speak. The silence is the victory.
The Moderate Shield.
Muhammad always had respectable allies. Tribal leaders. Community figures. Men of standing who provided cover and made the project socially acceptable to people who would otherwise have resisted it.
Today the moderate shield sounds like this: prominent Muslim voices who condemn terrorism in general terms while never examining the ideology that produces it. Interfaith organizations that generate warm feelings and signed statements while the expansion continues unaddressed. Academics who insist that any connection between Islamic doctrine and Islamic violence is ignorant bigotry.
They are not all cynical. That is what makes them effective. The shield works because Western culture desperately wants moderates to exist and be in control. We extend credibility the shield has not earned through results. We judge the ideology by its best representatives and ignore the pattern those representatives cannot explain.
PHASE 3: THE OPEN HAND BECOMES A FIST
When the base is strong enough, the demand structure changes. What was asked politely is now required. What was tolerated is now enforced. The host culture, by the time it recognizes what has happened, faces a cost of resistance that has risen dramatically.
The Ultimatum.
Muhammad’s template for dealing with communities he was strong enough to confront was explicit. Three choices. Convert. Submit and pay the jizya — the tax on non-Muslims, accepting permanent second-class status. Or face the consequences.
Today’s version is softer in language and identical in structure. Accept our terms. Accommodate our demands. Recognize our authority over our own community without interference. Or face consequences — legal, social, political, and where the expansion is most advanced, physical.
In 2025, a Nigerian Muslim Youth Council issued a formal demand to five national newspapers: retract published reporting within forty-eight hours or face — in their words — ‘more serious consequences.’ Not a government. Not a militia. A youth council. With a logo. On letterhead. That is the Medinan ultimatum, issued fourteen centuries after Medina, and it works on the same assumption it always has: that the threat alone will be enough.
Rewriting the Past.
Every territory Muhammad conquered had its pre-Islamic history erased and replaced. Pre-Islamic Arabia was declared Jahiliyyah — the age of ignorance. What came before Islam did not count.
Today: Nigeria’s national curriculum, now controlled by a man whose life’s work is the literal ‘Islamization of Knowledge,’ compulsory from primary school, content hidden behind a membership wall. In Britain: school curricula teaching the Crusades as Christian aggression with no mention of the seven centuries of Islamic conquest that preceded and provoked them. In America: university Middle East Studies departments, heavily funded by Gulf states, producing a generation of scholars who cannot discuss Islamic ideology without framing it as a response to Western provocation.
Control the past and you control the future. Muhammad understood this. His successors have never forgotten it.
Punishing Exit.
Once dominance is established, leaving becomes a capital offense. Apostasy — leaving Islam — is punishable by death under classical Islamic law. Enforced today in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and through extrajudicial violence in communities across the world, including in Western nations.
This is the lock on the door. It makes the gains permanent. A community cannot shrink through defection if defection costs you your life. It cannot be reformed from within if internal criticism is blasphemy. It cannot be examined honestly if honesty is a capital crime.
This is not incidental to the system. It is the system’s most important feature.
THE TEN MOVES — WHAT YOU’LL HEAR ONLINE
These are the arguments. Every one traces back to the Medina playbook. Once you see them labeled, you’ll recognize them in real time. And recognition breaks the power.
1. The Victimhood Pivot.
Any criticism of Islamic ideology is immediately reframed as an attack on Muslims as people. ‘You’re attacking my community.’ ‘This is Islamophobia.’ The goal is to make you defend yourself rather than prosecute your argument. Counter: separate the ideology from the people. You are not attacking Muslims. You are examining Islam. Those are different things.
2. The False Equivalence.
‘Christians did the Crusades.’ ‘The West has done worse.’ The goal is not to defend Islam — it’s to neutralize your argument through moral equivalence. The Crusades were a military response to Islamic conquest of Christian lands — but that history has been successfully erased. Counter: accept the premise and advance past it. Yes, the Crusades happened. Now let’s talk about what’s happening today, in Nigeria, in 2025.
3. The Moderate Claim.
‘That’s not real Islam.’ ‘Those are extremists.’ ‘We condemn that.’ The speaker gets credit for moderation. The killers face no consequence. Nothing changes. Counter: ask the simple question. What are you doing, specifically, to stop it? Condemnation without action is a performance.
4. The Peaceful Coexistence Performance.
‘We lived peacefully together for centuries.’ ‘Islam respects all prophets.’ True in limited ways. Strategically deployed to forestall examination. The coexistence always had a hierarchy — and it was never equality. Counter: what were the terms of that coexistence? Ask about dhimmi status. Ask about the jizya. Ask who was on top.
5. The Respect Demand.
‘You must respect our religion.’ Sounds reasonable. In practice it means silence — no criticism, no questioning, no mockery. It is a sharia speech code dressed in pluralist language. Counter: respect is earned, not mandated. Every other belief system in a free society is subject to examination. Islam is not exempt.
6. The Provocation Transfer.
‘You caused this.’ ‘What did you expect?’ Violence becomes the victim’s fault. The perpetrator becomes the reactor. Deborah Samuel caused her own burning. The Charlie Hebdo cartoonists caused their own deaths. This is the most psychologically sophisticated move in the playbook — it relocates moral responsibility from the killer to the killed. Counter: state it plainly. A person who burns a girl alive for a WhatsApp message is responsible for burning a girl alive. Full stop.
7. The Consequence Warning Dressed as Advice.
‘For your own safety, you shouldn’t say that.’ ‘People will react badly.’ Not a threat — an advisory. Plausible deniability. But the message is identical to ‘more serious consequences.’ Counter: name it. ‘Are you threatening me or warning me? Because those are different things and I’d like to know which one this is.’
8. The Dialogue Trap.
‘Come visit a mosque.’ ‘You don’t understand Islam — let me explain.’ It repositions the critic as ignorant. Buys time. Generates goodwill. Never resolves anything because resolution is not the goal — delay is. Counter: accept the invitation. Go. Ask hard questions. Don’t let the invitation substitute for the answers.
9. The Demographics Argument.
‘Islam is the fastest growing religion.’ ‘You will be outnumbered.’ Sometimes stated openly. More often implied. The message is: resistance is futile. Accommodate now on better terms than you’ll get later. It is the Medinan ultimatum in statistical form. Counter: demographics are not destiny. Ideas are destiny. And ideas can be countered.
10. The Solidarity Demand.
‘Muslims are under attack everywhere.’ ‘You must choose a side.’ Global Muslim solidarity — the ummah — weaponized to generate obligation. Counter: civilizational solidarity runs both ways. Western civilization has values worth defending. Name them. Stand in them.
STRANGE BEDFELLOWS — WHY THE LEFT DEFENDS THE SYSTEM THAT WOULD DESTROY IT
This is the question I get more than almost any other.
Why do liberals defend Islam? Why do gay rights activists march in solidarity with movements rooted in a theology that executes homosexuals? Why do feminists who would torch a Christian baker for declining a wedding cake go silent when women are stoned for leaving their husbands?
It looks like madness. It isn’t. It’s something colder and more calculated than madness — and understanding it is essential to understanding what we’re actually up against.
In Iran, homosexuality is a capital offense. Gay men are executed — sometimes publicly. In Gaza, the Palestinian Authority criminalizes homosexuality. In Saudi Arabia, in Afghanistan, in every territory where Islam has achieved full political dominance, the gay community faces imprisonment, torture, and death. The Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando — 49 dead, the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ community in American history — was carried out by a man whose motivation was explicitly rooted in Islamic ideology.
And yet significant portions of the LGBTQ political apparatus align with pro-Palestinian, pro-Islamic political movements. They march together. They vote together. They shout down the same critics together.
The same phenomenon plays out with feminists. Islam as practiced under Sharia assigns women half the legal testimony of men. Allows a man to take four wives. Restricts women’s freedom of movement, right to divorce, access to their own children. These are not fringe practices. They are Sharia. They are the law in a dozen Nigerian states, in Iran, in Saudi Arabia, in Afghanistan. They are the explicit goal of Islamic political movements operating in the West right now.
And the American feminist movement — which will organize a national campaign over a dress code at a Catholic school — has almost nothing to say about it.
They are not confused. They have made a calculation.
The left’s primary target — the thing it is most organized against — is Western civilization. Specifically: the Judeo-Christian moral order. Traditional family structure. National sovereignty. The individual conscience that answers to God before it answers to the state.
Islam is also at war with exactly those things. Different reasons. Different ultimate goals. Same target, right now, in this generation.
That makes them allies. Not because they like each other. Not because they share values. But because they share an enemy. And in politics, that is sometimes enough.
The left thinks it’s using Islam to burn down the Christian right. Islam has been burning down civilizations for 1,400 years. It doesn’t get used. It uses.
Here is where it gets dangerous. The progressive left does not intend to live under Sharia. They believe they are using Islam as a battering ram against the Christian right. That they are the smart ones. In control of the alliance. That once Christianity is broken, they will deal with Islam on their own terms.
They are wrong. Catastrophically, historically wrong.
In 1979, Iranian gay rights activists marched alongside Khomeini’s revolution. They believed it was about liberation from the Shah. They were right about the Shah. They were catastrophically wrong about what came next. Within months of the revolution’s success, Khomeini began executing homosexuals. The same people who had marched with him were among the first to die.
That was not an accident. It was the playbook.
The left has spent fifty years training itself to see the world through one lens: oppressor versus oppressed. Whoever claims victim status wins the argument. Islam — especially in the Western context — is a master of claiming victim status. The ‘Islamophobia’ frame. The minority community frame. The immigrant frame. The colonial grievance frame.
And the left, trained to reflexively defend the oppressed, cannot process the evidence in front of them. The evidence says: this ideology kills gay people, subjugates women, murders apostates, and is explicitly committed to replacing every legal system on earth with Sharia. But the filter says: minority religion, historically marginalized, victim of Western imperialism.
The filter wins. Every time. Until the fire reaches them.
THE COUNTER STRATEGY
A magician’s trick only works in the dark. Name it and the power drains out of it.
That is the entire strategy. Prebunking — not debunking. Show people the playbook before they encounter it. A person who has never seen the Provocation Transfer will feel genuine guilt when it’s deployed. A person who has seen it labeled and illustrated will recognize it in real time. Recognition breaks the spell.
This has never been done at scale. Not in Europe. Not in America. Not in Nigeria. Every civilization that has faced this expansion did so without a map.
We have a map.
Every pastor, every teacher, every parent, every elected official, every journalist who learns this playbook and teaches it to someone else is building the immune system this civilization needs. Not with weapons — with knowledge. Not with hatred — with clarity.
But let’s be honest about what clarity requires. It requires saying out loud what the comfortable have refused to say for twenty years. It requires treating a 1,400-year-old pattern as what it is — a pattern — not a series of unrelated tragedies with no common thread.
And it requires accepting that the window for words is real, but not unlimited.
I have spent fifteen years in Nigeria. I traveled to Bokkos LGA in the months after jihadists massacred Christians on Christmas Day — and what I saw was not just the silence of a cleared village. It was mountains of fresh dirt where Chinese strip-mining operations had moved in behind the killing. The land was already gone. That is the full picture: jihadists clear the people, and the machinery arrives before the blood is dry. I have sat with children who watched their parents hacked to death and did not understand why the world was not paying attention.
They still don’t understand why.
Name it.
The playbook only works in the dark.
Rise.
